Riely the Frisbee Dog
Handler: Rodney Buckwalter
In 1994, my wife Sonya, found Riely abandoned as a puppy and brought him home. Riely
was instantly adopted into the family by our other dogs, Ryan (Westie) and Rutger (Beagle).
Riely is a Border Collie, which is a herding breed and recognized as the most intelligent of
all the breeds. Border Collies are also very energetic and constanly need something to do.
After he had already rampaged my house and chewed nearly thirty pair of Sonya's shoes, I
discovered that he was exceptional at catching a disc, and established chasing Frisbees as
Riely's new job. This distracted him just enough to save Sonya's shoes.

In 1997, through the internet, I learned of the Alpo South Central Regional competition in
San Antonio, and decided to pack the car and dogs and give the sport of Canine Disc a
shot. Even though we didn't know any tricks or manuevers and my throwing skills were
lacking, Riely made enough graceful catches to qualify us for the final round in Division II.
We have been hooked on the sport ever since.
Now available for live exhibitions, video and film
